In now: Currant grapes are juicy little pops of flavour, like sweet fruity caviar.

Not for long: As mango season comes to a close the harvest is spread far and wide, as are the options. As well as Kensington pride, look for R2E2, Pearl, Calypso, Honey Gold, and just briefly, Silky, a new hybrid variety available from Harris Farm markets.

Best buy: Lychee season is in full swing.

In the vegie patch: Proud of your tomatoes? Enter the Home-grown Tomato category of the Tomato Festival at Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney on this weekend, Saturday 20 and 21 February. Entries close 5pm Thursday 18 February.

What else:

  • Chinese New year means it’s time for longans. Buy them still on the stem.
  • finger limes are in season. Scoop out the juicy vesicles to top salads, fish and shellfish.
  • jam makers should keep an eye out for bargain boxes of figs and the last of the New Zealand apricots
  • stock up cucumbers and get pickling
