In season

September 30

In now: Basil is returning to affordability now the weather has warmed. There are locally grown leaves available, as well as those huge ones from Queensland.

At its best: Mulberries are only in season for a short time. They don’t store well so buy to enjoy. Mix with blueberries and strawberries, which are also at their best.

Best buy: Broccoli is the budgeter’s friend this week. Enjoy it in stir fries, pasta sauces, salads and sides. I’m loving it boiled til tender-crisp and tossed with lemon zest and black olive tapenade from Rosnay, an organic vineyard and orchard in Canowindra.

In the vegie patch: Find full sun in the garden or pots for basil. Keep well-watered and fed and pinch out growing tips to make a bushy plant.

What else:

  • blood oranges are good for another few weeks
  • check asparagus tips for freshness – they should be tight
  • tangelos will finish soon
  • some good celery bargains this week
